Magoki-Attari Mosque

The Magoki-Attari Mosque is located in downtown Bukhara's residential quarter. In the medieval times, a fire worshipper temple (a pre-Islamic Moh temple) was located and later the Arab people built this mosque here.

The asymmetrical façade's right side is a portal with a concaved vault and having some rectangular strips as decoration. The appearance of the architecture is grey-yellowish under the bright sunlight, and carved terra-cotta plant patterns in certain parts are noticeable. Archeological excavations have discovered that the southern portal has ornamental bricklaying and carved majolica, which were from the 12th century, are the masterpiece of Bukhara's architecture. The later redesigned façade survives with very little damage received in its history. In the 16th century, the thick sand layers had been increasing considerably, therefore, mosque looked like sinking into the soil and the façade could be revealed as a result of excavations done in the 1930s.
