Perched on the vast Gandeli Grassland of Yijinhuoluo Qi, Ordos, Inner Mongolia, the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan is a highlight during your stopover in Inner Mongolia. Featuring three connected "yurts", this iconic landmark is easy to identify. For the Mongolian people, it is the most sacred site, for Genghis Khan, their eternal and beloved national hero's soul rests here. It holds such great importance that a special team named Daerhute was allocated to guard it day and night during the past 800 years. Today, the grand Genghis Khan Worship Ceremony and Naadam Festival lend it with boundless fun and vitality.

Covering an area of over 80km2, the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan Scenic Area consists of the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan, History and Cultural Museum, Inner Mongolia Ethnic Village, Naadam Horsemanship Center, Hot Air Balloon Club, Recreational Center and Ritual Worship Center where you can see Aobao, archways and Sulede Altar.

The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan covers an area of over 5500m2, which is 400m2 larger than that of White House. Serving as a sharp contrast to Han emperors’ tombs such as The Ming Tombs, the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, Qianling Mausoleum, Yong Mausoleum , Maoling Mausoleum, Dr. Sun Yatsen Mausoleum,  it is not surrounded by mountains, rivers, dense trees and sculptures. Instead, it stands alone in the vast grassland characterized by timeless beauty as the only permanent building. This yurt-shaped architecture complex breathes full of Mongolian flavor, with its domes painted with auspicious patterns and the Mongols’ favorite color.

At 26m, the Main Hall adopts an octagon floor plan. This roofed multi-layer yurt has yellow-tiled dome brimmed with blue-tiled eaves. Inside of it you can see the five-meter high statue of Genghis Khan. Behind him is the map of the great Yuan dynasty, whose size is three times of today’s China, the biggest one ever existed in the world. The rear hall contains Genghis Khan and his wives’ coffins. In front of their coffins a giant altar erects, which is occupied by incense burner, butter lamps and Genghis Khan’s various artifacts such as the saddles.

The East Hall shelters the coffins of Tuolei, Genghsi Khan’s most favorite son while the West Hall houses nine war flags and the holy arrows attached to the war flags called Suleding used by Genghis Khan during his great expedition. Rumors had it that Genghis Khan’s soul is attached to these arrows. Hence, Suleding is very sacred, just like the cross to the Christian.

Though it is not the real tomb of Genghis Khan, this mausoleum is more than a site which contains his and his family members’ remnants. According to Qi Zhongyi, one descendant of Genghis Khan, the coffin of Genghis Khan holds numerous sensational secrets which cannot be told. The Mongols worship soul more than the physical body. According to Mongolian tradition, whenever a family member is dying, they will put one white camel fur in front of his or her nose to absorb the soul. The white camel fur of Genghis Khan is treasured within this mausoleum.

Genghis Khan Worship Ceremony

To worship Genghis Khan, the Mongols have set up a most intricate routine as early as the 13th century. Kublai Khan even issued edicts to specify the procedures minutely. By now, Genghis Khan Worship Ceremony boasts over 60 variants which split into daily worship, month worship and quarter worship roughly. Among all of them, the one hosted during March 21(lunar calendar) is the grandest one. On this day, each league in Inner Mongolia will send out a team of representatives. They will dress up in national attires, bringing Hada and mouth-watering delicacies like muttons, Mare Milk Wine, whole roasted lamp, cheese and yurt.

Daerkute people: the professional tomb-guardian of the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan

Another legend of this site is the Daerkute tribe, whose exclusive mission is to guard the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan from life to death, from the past till forever. Their ancestors were the security guardians of Genghis Klan. After Genghis Khan passed away, 500 of them shouldered the great task to guard his mausoleum. Following the will of Genghis Klan, they do not shoulder any governmental positions, nor do they pay taxes. From cradle to candle, they devote all the time and energy to guard the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan, to preserve and host the timeworn worship ritual ceremony each year. The over 800-year-old doctrines and rituals are passed down from fathers to sons.
