Barak Khan Madrassah


Located to the east of the Chorsu Market and situated amid Tashkent's old buildings, the Barak Khan Madrassah was built in the latter half of the 16th century to honor Barak Khan. It has religious and memorial functions, and a one-storey building surrounds a courtyard. The main facade of the establishment is divided by a grand doorway which a half-octagonal niche inside. Although it is a memorial to Barak Khan, he is not included in the burials of deceased in the courtyard. After he died in 1556, he was buried in Samarkand. The Residence of the Mufti (Islamic law expert) of the Spiritual Board of Muslims in Uzbekistan is located inside the mausoleum.

Recording in some historical documents stated that blue tiles covered the dome of the mausoleum, and the dome's drum was decorated with stars of geometric, mosaic patterns. Certain architectural restorations have been done to the madrassah.
