Zezhol Monastery

Zezhol Monastery is on the Zezhol Mountain, Xigan County, and 37 km away from county center. With 4800 meter altitude, this is the one of the highest monasteries in Tibet, also one of the oldest and most important monasteries. Zezhol Monastery was rebuilt by the Bon religion famous monk Zengrenkangzhu in the middle of 14th century. Zezhol means six peaks, due to the special mountain shape around the monastery.
 

Because of some historical reason, Bon religion gave up its domination of Tibet to the Buddhism and moved to the remote place to preserve its power. It makes this place has the most Bon temples and followers. Zezhol Monastery is the existing biggest, best preserved monastery with the most believers.
Zezhol is on the snow mountain with 4800 meter altitude, natural condition is extremely difficult. Bon monks are practicing Buddhism under very difficult circumstances. Now it has over 200 monks, the monastery opened 3 schools for them. Zezhol Monastery’s Bon temple can systematically describes the Bon classic; teach a variety of practice methods including a mysterious and ancient Bon Supreme Yoga. There is also an ancient Bon naked god dance.
In mid-June to late August of each year is the best worship time to Zezhol Monastery, every year in the late of June, there will be annual Puja and Sacred Dance.
