No.1. Ghost City of Karamay (克拉玛依市乌尔禾魔鬼城)
Urumqi is the city farthest to any sea on earth. It is also the center of Asia during the past. With glittering and glistening glaciers, mind-blowing peaks, mirror-like Heaven Lake(Tianchi), dazzling Five-Color Bay, and awe-inspiring Devils’ City, delicious fruits and food, exotic bazaars and markets, captivating singing and dancing, Urumqi is anything but boring and backward. Aug to Sep is the best time to sample its tastes, sounds and sights. May to Oct is for general sightseeing. Dec to Feb is for winter sports. Devils’ City

. The innumerable clay columns here come in all shapes, sizes, colors and combinations. They can be likened to castles, pagodas, temples, churches, human beings, fairies, devils and animals. A simple glimpse of them will leave a lasting impression on your mind. It is kind of terrifying to visit it during night, when the gales rise. I am sure it will make your hairs stand on end.
No.2.Flaming Mountain of Turpan Depression(吐鲁番盆地火焰山)
Flaming Mountain of Turpan Depression is the hottest place in China. It spans 100km long and 10km at its widest. During summer, the mountains bathed by the scorching sunshine, appear to be on fire. Do use a tour agency to avoid getting lost. It is easy and pretty dangerous to get lost in this area.
No.3. Badain Jaran Desert
Badain Jaran desert(巴丹吉林沙漠) is the third largest desert in China. Its signature sights are some of the worlds’ tallest stationary sand dunes on earth.
Taklimankan Desert means “those coming in will never come back”. Spanning over 1000km long, and 400km wide, Taklimakan Desert is the biggest desert in China and the second largest shifting desert on earth. The relics and remnants of the Silk Road dot this desert and well worth exploration.
No.5. General Gobi (昌吉州将军戈壁)
General Gobi perched off the eastern rim of Junggar Basin, could be one of the most desolate, yet most mysterious and amazing place on earth. Along the windswept wasteland, a sea of fossils of plants and animals (even dinosaurs and sometimes precious stones), lay silently unprotected. The extreme heat and sunshine co-create a spectacle: mirage. Extreme and dramatic sights abound in General Gobi. Among which, Five Color City Xinjiang, Devil’s City Xinjiang, Dinosaur Valley, Red Willow Beach are fine examples. During the early 20th century, one 30-ton-meteorite fell onto this area. The locals tried to burn it off for 7 days and nights, luckily, it survived and was transported away by geologists.
No.6. Lop Nor ( nuclear testing site in Xinjiang )罗布泊
It is Xinjiang’s answer to Bermuda. The Silk Road once traversed this forbidden land, and many died here.
No.7.Five Color Hills of Xinjiang(吉木萨尔县城五彩湾)
235km northeast of Urumqi lies a massive stretch of colorful eroded land known as Five Color Hills(City). It belongs to Yardang landform formed over 400million years ago.
No.8 Singing Sand Dune
If you deem deserts as harsh, desolate and boring, then Singing Sand Dune in Dunhuang will help to revolutionize your thoughts. Crescent Spring and Singing Sand Dune are a must-see in Dunhuang. The sand dunes here can sing, which testifies to the romantic side of the desert.
