Small Wild Goose Pagoda is Buddhism pagoda in Jianfu Temple, Xian city. The official name is Jianfu temple Buddhist pagoda. This is a well preserved ancient Tang dynasty pagoda. Built in Jinglong period of Tang dynasty, the pagoda originally had 15 stories, now remains 13 stories with 43.4 meter high. Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Small Wild Goose Pagoda are facing opposite. They are two important landmarks since the Tang dynasty. Due to the scale is smaller than the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and built after it, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda got its present name.
In Tang dynasty, there’s a famous monk named Yijing. He started in Luoyang in 671, passed through Guangzhou, took the sea way to India, across more than 30 countries, took 25 years to return to Tang. He brought 400 Buddhist books back. In 706, Yijing started to translate the books in Jianfu Temple, and wrote a book. Those are valuable for studying China – India cultural exchange history.

In 1487, there was a 6 level earthquake in Shaanxi; the Small Wild Goose Pagoda appeared a more than one foot wide slit. While after 34 years, in 1521 there was another earthquake, the slit was closed magically overnight. People were all shocked. After the foundation of PRC, during a renovation, they found that according to the geological conditions in Xi'an, ancient craftsmen specifically built the base of the pagoda into a semi-sphere with rammed earth. After the earthquake the pressure is uniformly dispersed. Thus, the pagoda is like a tumbler, though after dozens of earthquakes, it still survived and stands. We are all stunned by ancient craftsmen’s superb architecture artistry.
