Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region

Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, lies to the west of the Yellow River and to the east of Helan Mountain. Lying in the central section of Ningxia Plain which is irrigated by the Yellow River, Yinchuan holds abundant water resources and enjoys the reputation of “a land of fish and rice in the frontier”.

Western Xia Imperial Tombs

Western Xia Imperial Tombs were built at the east foot of the Helan Mountains, 25 kilometers west of Yinchuan City. It is one of the largest and the most completed emperor cemeteries in China. Like other imperial tombs, Western Xia mausoleums are composed of two architectural units, the mausoleum gardens above ground and underground palaces. The unique characteristics of Western Xia Imperial Tomb are clearly visible on the spiritual terraces. The mounds of Western Xia tombs look like squat Buddhist pagodas, round or octagonal. While other mounds in the Han, Tang and Northern Song dynasties are generally high, square-based packed earth mounds with tapering tops cut flat and gently sloped sides.

The China Western Film Studios

The China Western Film Studios were built by an author named Zhang Xianliang in 1993. The film studios were awarded the top 500 brands in Asia in 2012, and are  hailed as “a treasure in Ningxia” by the Hui people. There are more than 140 scenes from famous movies and TV series being filmed in this place. In the studios, we can see the living environment in the ancient time, and experience the ancient life. Waking around the film studios, I just feel that it likes a time tunnel that allows us to have a close to history.

Helanshan Rock Paintings

The ancient rock paintings are pretty hard to see in the wild as they've been exposed to the elements for thousands of years. It might the ones in the museum that can be clear. The Helanshan Rock Painting is quite scenic. The paintings on cliffs are simple and easy to understand. The contents of paintings include hunting, grazing, dancing, sacrifice and so on, which reflect people’s living and faith during the old time. The experience that walking through well-preserved, scenic areas was really wonderful.

Yinchuan Special food

Every place has its own typical dishes. So does Yinchuan. Here you can taste the local dishes or snacks of rich Islamic flavor. The most alluring of Yinchuan delicacies is mutton cooked under various culinary method. Haggis is one of the most popular dished among the Hui people, a bowl of sliced mutton, vermicelli and diced Chinese pancake soaked in hot broth with chopped chilies and scallion. The savory soup, tender meat, spicy flavor and low price are listed as the main reasons for its popularity among tourists and local people.
