Climate in China

Complicated and diverse Climate

China is a vast country, cross-broader latitude, a big gap between the distance from the sea, the high and low terrain types and diversity of mountains, so precipitation and temperature varied and formed a diverse climate. From the type of climate perspective, the eastern part of China is a monsoon climate (can be divided into sub-tropical monsoon climate, temperate monsoon climate and tropical monsoon climate), north-west of China is a temperate continental climate, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is a cold climate. From the band of temperature, China could be divided into tropical climate, subtropical climate, warm-temperate climate, temperate climate and cold climate, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau area climate. From the division of the dry district and wet district, there are moist areas, semi-humid areas, and semi-arid areas, the sub-arid areas. Besides, in the same temperature band, it may contain different wet and dry areas. Therefore, in the same type of climate there will be a difference between quality of heat and dry-damp level. The complex and varied terrain brings more complicated climatic diversity.

 Notable monsoon climate in China

China's monsoon climate is characterized of raininess and heat in summer coldness and dryness in winter and the high-temperature phase is in the same period with the rainy period. China locates in the largest continent in the world - the eastern part of the Eurasian continent, and on the west bank of world's largest ocean - the Pacific Ocean. It is also near to the Indian Ocean, so the impact of the ocean climate and mainland climate are very significant. The northerly wind in winter from mainland to ocean and southerly wind from ocean to mainland are the regular climate phenomena. Monsoon in winter arising from the interior mainland is featured of coldness and dryness. In its influence, in winter, in most areas of China is generally less precipitation, low temperature, and the north of China is more prominent. Wind in summer from the southeast Pacific Ocean and the southwest Indian Ocean. It is warm and humid. In its impact, precipitation is increasing and rain and heat happen in the same quarter. Due to the extensive influence of monsoon in winter and summer, China is the most prominent country affected by the most typical monsoon climate.

To most degree, climate of China is advantageous to the agricultural development in many aspects. However, on the other hand, it also brings frequent climatic disasters, such as drought, flood, cold wave and typhoon. Drought and flood disasters occur annually in China, most of the drought in the north and drought and flood in the south. In summer and autumn seasons, China's southeastern coastal areas are often affected by tropical storm, the typhoon hit, from June to September. In the autumn season, the cold air southward from Mongolia and Siberia, the temperature drops off dramatically. Cold can cause hypothermia, wind, sand, frost, and other disasters in China.
