Shuihui Garden

Among many famous gardens, there is a well-known and unique one in Nantong. This garden is named Shuihui garden. Concerning this garden, there was also a romantic love story took place. Mao Pijiang, a talent of Jiangnan during the time of late Ming dynasty and early Qing dynasty retreated here with the famous beauty, Dong Xiaowan of Nanjing. Shuihui garden is considered to be a pearl on the northern plain of Jiangsu province. The whole garden is mainly featured of water and highlighted by the characters of beauty and elegance. More traditions in spirit are also discovered in the garden such as the poem, literature, music, book, painting, calligraphy, operas and so on. It is fully emphasized as the Literator Garden, a bookish garden.

Shuihui Garden is located as the northeast part of the downtown of Rugao County, and it originally was established in Ming dynasty by the local people Mao Yiguan. After four-generation handing down, Mao Pijiang reconstructed and refined this garden. Eventually it became the show of the ideal picture and world in accordance with the talent of Mr. Mao. In 2001, as the ancient architecture of Qing dynasty, Shuihui Garden was ranked the fifth batch of cultural relic sites under the nation-class protection.
