Ethnic Clothes of Zhuang Nationality

Zhuang people’s ethnic clothes demonstrate a perfect blend of simplicity and grace, the dark palette is balanced by colorful and exquisite embroidery and brocade, two quintessential parts of Zhuang handicrafts. Popular motifs such as flora, frog and bird reflect their primitive nature worship and agrarian culture. Zhuang people’s ethnic clothes serves as an encyclopedia, from which you can read their faith, sense of beauty, passion, love and aspiration.

Zhuang men usually wear Tangzhuang(Chinese Suit), which split into right opening collarless ones and front opening tights. Their tops feature six to eight pairs of knotted fabric buttons, three pockets (two minor ones in the chest and a big one in the abdomen) and folded broad hems with symmetrical splitting. Zhuang men wear loose knee-length trousers, leggings and headgears. In summer, they usually go barefooted while in winter, they wear homemade fabric shoes and black headgears.

Zhuang women are usually equipped from head to toe with blue or black clothes.
Their navy blue or dark blue tops fall into collared or collarless, front opening or side opening ones. They also wear broad hem trousers, colorful headgears and delicate aprons. Contrasted by colorful embroidered scarves, handbags, shoes and aprons, the palette of Zhuang women’s clothes is anything but boring.

Though outshone by luxurious Miao attires or rainbow-colored Yao clothes, Zhuang fashion interprets beauty in an understated way and demonstrates that less is more. Earrings and bracelets are popular accessories. Spinning, weaving and dyeing are essential skills of every Zhuang woman. During festivals or market fairs, you can appreciate their embroidered fabric shoes, which are state-of-the-art masterpieces.

Silver Ornament

In its zenith, Zhuang ornaments enjoyed great popularity and was blessed with great diversity, excellent craftsmanship and three-dimensional effect. Silver combs, hairpins, earrings, necklaces and rings are the most common ones. During the Headman’s Reign Era (Song to Qing Dynasty), that is from 10th to 20th century, wealthy Zhuang women wore four necklaces and ten earrings which amounted to over 1kg in total. In north Guangxi, some Zhuang women put on nine giant necklaces. Decorated with relief motifs and accompanied by bells, these artworks lend an air of aristocracy. From paper-thin to brick-thick, Zhuang silver ornaments, though faded away, can still be appreciated in museums and grand festivals. (If you are into silver ornaments, well, time your visit during Sisters’ Meal Festival in Shidong Miao Village, where you can see the most fabulous silver ornaments in the world.)
