Last Day in China

Well, we've done it.
We traveled to Tibet by a full day train over the Tibetan Plateau.
We visited the towns along the Tea Horse Road. Shangri La, Lijiang, Dali.
We saw many amazing views of the Jade Dragon Mountain and the Hapa.

Between them the roaring waters of the Gorge
That starts the Yangtze River and sends to Shanghai.
And then we saw some strange sites of White Water Terrace and the Stone Forest.

We visited the towns on the Southern Silk Road.
Xining, Xizou, Baisha...with their traditional art and handicraft still intact.
Tie die, batik, silk embroidery, silver and wood work. And their vibrant markets where you find fresh meat of all kinds of animals and never-seen-before fruits of all colors and shapes.
And the romantic village of Shaxi where time stopped when the Empires of China ceased to exist.
We visited numerous religious sites and a Sacred Lake often sharing and admiring their beliefs.
My personal favorite, Jokang Temple.

We learned the stories of the minority people too.
The Naxi's, the Yi's, the Bai people, Sani, Hui.
And their peaceful and soothing music and dances.

And the food!
Starting from Yak meat,
Mouth burning Hot Pot,
Cross Bridge Rice Noodle.
Noodles and noodles and noodles.
And dumplings of all sizes everywhere!
Oh I loved those dumplings!
Especially the ones you get off the street steamers.
One large steamed dumpling, one Yuen. About 15 cents.
At any local market we visited, I would average 3 dumplings.
All steamy and good and delicious.

And the Tea!
After all this is the Tea Road.
From the plain green tea to just born pale green leaf tea from 800 year old tree.
They say the best comes from the trees in the highest mountain in warm and humid weather. Highest? Because they are touching the heaven and the air is pure.

Finally the people.
Everywhere you go people say hello and welcomes you.
And the merchants anxious to offer their proud goods.

Well, this was our 16-day travel to the far south western corner of China.
And now we return to our friends and families.
We thank our Lord for the blessings and keeping us healthy and safe.

P.S. I played a round at the longest and highest course in the world.
No, I did not shoot the highest.

View from the train from Xining to Lhasa

Tina's Tea House at Tiger Leaping Gorge

711 yard Par 5, the longest, at Snow Mountain Golf Course, Lijiang

Shaxi Old Town, Dali

 Stone Forest, Kunming

Which Country (Countries) did you visit on this trip? China
Your overall comments on the trip and the travel company:
China Absolute Tours International Inc.

Their recommendations turned out to be some of the best parts of my trip. Everything was handled very well and each detail including transportation was organized and flawless. I was very surprised by the level of service. The recommendations were not standard tourist destinations and included some very off the typical path places.

What were the most enjoyable or memorable parts of your trip?
We went through some Dong Villages that were amazing and well off the beaten path. Each hotel recommendation was perfectly picked! All the hiking and biking was amazing. This was not standard tourism and China Absolute tours did a fantastic job of listening and helping in the itinerary.

If you could take your trip again, what would you do differently?
I would spend one more day around the River Li. Otherwise, I think the trip was planned well.

*Your overall comments on the trip and the travel company:
China Absolute Tours was well organized from our first email contact with Eric. He made excellent suggestion on additional days that we wished to add on.

Hotels were great.  Guides and transportation always on time for meeting us. I really believe that our trip covered all the places that we wanted to visit in China and more.

We were exposed to traditional Chinese food and culture which was amazing. The information provided by each guide was informative and helpful. They all were very knowledgeable about each place we visited. Would definitely recommend this tour agency to sort out your Asian holiday.

* What were the most enjoyable or memorable parts of your trip?
Best Places of visit - Great Wall Of China, Forbidden City and Terra Cottar Warriors

Best place stayed - Yangshou Tea Cozy (Boutique Hotel)

Best Meal At - Brickyard Restaurant

Best Show - ERA Acrobatic Show

Best Leisurely Activity - Tongli Ancient Water Town

Best Scenic Ride - The Bullet Train

* If you could take your trip again, what would you do differently?

Spend a month in China instead of 14 days.  Stay a little longer in some of the places that we visited.  ie Yangshou and Tongli - "great experience"

Feedback from Dr.Dana Vulpescu (Germany)

Dear Eric,

Thanks you for your excellent service. We enjoyed a 3 week round trip, covering the most important tourist spots like Beijing, Xi'an, Jiuzhaigou, Chengdu, Guilin and Shanghai. Our hotels have been excellent throughout the country and our local guides were extremely attentive and trying hard to please any extra wishes. When one of our flights was cancelled due to bad weather the agency did everything possible to resolve the inconvenience. Five out of five stars. We would recommend for any China traveller.

Best Regards!

Your overall comments on the trip and the travel company:
Great trip. Great company overall.  No mishaps. Well organized especially booking/ planning last minute.  Zoe was great. Lily our guide in Beijing was great too. I would've given 5 stars but for the guide in Xian. Nice person, reasonably good English but for lack of a better term- we just didn't click! I think she would do great in another industry. Maybe it was an off day or two for her but somehow the concept of " the customer" comes first " got lost somewhere. She needs to be less dictatorial and more flexible. While we had flexible options in Beijing in terms of food and sites( had a great time) , the Xian leg, especially food choices were non negotiable - not so much I would think from a company standpoint but more so due to lack of guide flexibility and enthusiasm - even when I was prepared to pay the extra! Xian, especially the Muslim quarter and its eclectic food was the highlight for me- no mention of it by the guide - we explored at night and " discovered" it and loved it. Again, not to sound too critical- I'm glad that they were able to pick us up and drop us off and share some facts with us- but in comparing the Beijing vs Xian tours, I think we could've done better in the latter.

What were the most enjoyable or memorable parts of your trip?
Great Wall hike-  took a while to get there but we went sufficiently far out west ( jinshanling) so that we could enjoy fantastic views, no crowds and a great hike.

Xian- terracotta Warriors were ok. Nice to see   The Muslim quarter for me with its night market and food was much more impressive and enjoyable.

If you could take your trip again, what would you do differently?
This was a last minute trip so perhaps better panning the next time. Arrange for pickup and drop off at sites for convenience. Hotels were very nice. I suspect you can get cheaper if you plan ahead. But do the actual tours of various sites yourself - so much info available these days online and on various apps( triposo was great) that you can learn much more than the guide often provides. Nice to get a local historical perspective but remember it tends to be influenced/ controlled/ biased as in typical of many places one visits.
